A teacher and a child were walking through the forest and stopped before a small sapling.
Pull it up the teacher said, and the child did – easily – with just their two fingers.
Now pull that one up, said the teacher and the child did, pulling up roots and all
And that one too, said the teacher. This tree was about the size of the child now, and with great effort, throwing all their weight back and away from the ground, using sticks and stones to cut at the roots…
Finally the child got the tree loose.
Now, the teacher said, pull this one up.
The child followed the gaze of the teacher, which led them to see a giant redwood, 200 feet high the two could barely see the top.
I’m sorry, said the student, I simply can’t get this job done with just my hands and no tools.
This is a tale of the power that habits will have over our life.
The older they are, the bigger they get, the deeper the roots will grow, and the harder they are to free up…
And some so big we hesitate to even try.
