1021. Hainesport Endurance Race

A timed event around a one-mile track with 12 hr, 24, hr, 48 hr, and 100 mile options. It sounds crazy, but one of the benefits of this style of race is that it’s a super-controlled environment.

Crews can set up stations along the loop to supply food, liquids, gear, and encouragement.

Anthony and I posted up to help the runners in our tent with whatever they needed – friends, family, etc – and every damn one of them put TF out:

Corie ran 50 miles for the 12 hour event, 2x her longest run, and her first ultra ever.

Grace ran 44 miles for the 12 hour event, 3x her longest run, and her first ultra ever.

Kaylee is on a terror and placed 2nd overall in the 100 mile event, smashing the female course record by something like 2 hours. (18:20:00)

Gagz placed 3rd overall in the 100 mile event – his 4th hundred miler completed at Hainesport, and his 15th hundred-mile finish

Sergia Diaz placed 2nd overall in the 12 hour event with 64 miles

Pete Wei placed 3rd overall in the 12 hour event with 60 miles.

Nick grinded out the 100 miler to get his 4th hundred mile finish

I know 100 miles isn’t easy, or setting a new distance PR. It was incredibly amazing to experience you all give it your best, that’s part of what ultras are all about🔥

I crewed this event. It was a lot of effort and I loved every second of it.

The thing was, I didn’t have to crew these runners, but I wanted to see them give their best miles

With these timed events, every minute counts. And every minute not moving forward, there’s only so much time in a timed event. The clock is always ticking.

The aid station is a big time waster, getting gear, fluids, food, whatever it is. The runner can get this done but say they stop 5 minutes every hour? That’s a whole hour of just getting squared up. That’s fine, but if you’re going against someone who has a crew and doesn’t need to stop?

They’ll almost always put up more miles than you, they have a whole hour extra. Maybe you could put up an extra four or five miles?

If that’s what you want – what do you want? Why do you run?

Important points to reflect on.

I run because it brings out the best in me, and gives me hard experiences to reflect back on.

We can do a lot more than we think we can.
