We adopted a Pittie 6 years ago from ACCT Philly.
If you have any questions or anything please reach out. He’s been amazing but it’s also been a lot of work. More than we originally thought. Definitely taking on more responsibilities.
So, if you’re set on getting a dog, here are some tips that helped us that many people don’t do, and will help avoid bad behavior:
- I’d recommend doing early morning walks with them to help get their energy out and build/ maintain a bond. Champ was 1 when we got him and he needed a good 1.5 hours of exercise. Now he’s maturing so it’s down to about .5 hours. Even them sniffing around is just good mental stimulation. We have him on a hermsprenger collar too just for his walks.
- They’ll chew through most dog toys but elk antlers hold up well, another way to get their energy out.
- Also keeping them on the leash while yous are inside for a few weeks so that they can learn manners, get used to life with you, and build that bond.
- Positive reinforcement, dog treats, exercise, and stimulation are the secrets for a good boy.
- In the beginning, I’d push to let the dog out to relieve themselves more times than not to avoid accidents/ mess and help them get in that ‘going to the bathroom outside habit’: after they eat, every other hour, and twice in the hour before you leave.
- Lastly, should anything come up, Dr. Brees Animal Hospital is top-notch and located in the 19136. It is one of the best animal hospitals in the tri-state area. They do check-ups etc too, our family has been taking animals there for decades.
