How much time do we spend learning about sleep? I don’t remember taking that course at all.
Considering we spend roughly one-third of our lives sleeping. Investing in quality sleep is a long-term game that plays a huge role in our daily lives, yet many of us neglect this crucial aspect of our well-being. Even when something has to be compromised for time because we’re running late or whatever, sleep is usually what gets taxed…
The funny thing is, people can barely keep a car for five years, yet still sleep on the same mattress since they were 15. We’re trying to set ourselves up to win and attack each and every day, right? Not just mosey on through. Yet, most people don’t get the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night.
Humans are the only species to deliberately “skip” sleep, mostly because we’re too “busy.” But sleep is when our bodies nourish and recover. Lack of sleep increases the risk of heart and brain problems, suppresses the immune system, and impairs various other necessary bodily functions.
Here are 10 tips to prioritize your sleep and create a sleep sanctuary that promotes relaxation and rejuvenation:
- Stick to a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends.
- Exercise regularly, but avoid intense workouts close to bedtime.
- Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, especially in the evening.
- Avoid large meals and excessive hydration before bed.
- Avoid napping after 3 PM.
- Establish a relaxing nighttime routine, such as meditation, stretching, or reading a book.
- Keep the bedroom dark, cool, and quiet.
- Get enough sunlight during the day to regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
- Use your bed for sleeping only, not for work or screen time.
- Invest in a high-quality mattress, pillows, and sheets that promote comfort and support. Blackout curtains can also be a game-changer.
Take a moment to reevaluate your relationship with sleep. When we invest in our sleep, we invest in our overall health and happiness.
