1401. The Raw Truth About Dog Ownership: It’s Not All Belly Rubs and Cuddles

Let’s cut the bullshit about dog ownership being all Instagram moments and cute TikTok videos.

Having a dog is basically signing up for a 10-15 year commitment to care for an emotionally needy, perpetual toddler who might never learn to use the toilet properly, thinks your shoes are chew toys, trash can diving, table surfing, and anything else that dogs do… because their dogs that need to be trained.

Constantly trained.

And you know what? It’s fucking worth it.

But only if you’re ready for the real work.

Here’s the truth nobody tells you on those adorable adoption posts:

Your life as you know it is over. That spontaneous weekend trip? Dead. Those peaceful 8-hour sleep sessions? Murdered. Your pristine furniture? Say goodbye. Going out all day for Christmas or new years or any special occasion? Probably needs to be cut short.

Your dog doesn’t give a shit about your plans or preferences. They operate on their own schedule, which usually involves needing to pee at every other hour, especially when they’re a puppy or just getting adopted.

Training isn’t a cute little hobby you do on weekends. It’s a relentless, daily grind that requires more patience than dealing with your passive-aggressive coworker Karen. Your dog will test every ounce of your sanity. They’ll look you dead in the eye while peeing on your new rug, right after you’ve spent an hour walking them. Why? Because they can.

The financial commitment? It’s not just food and toys. It’s vet bills that make your credit card weep. It’s replacing the couch they destroyed while you were “only gone for five minutes.”

Maybe it’s even professional training because you don’t want to put the time in to training them and YouTube videos aren’t cutting it.

How long does it take for a dog to learn how to sit or not piss in the house or not whine? As long as it takes.

But here’s where it gets interesting: All this sacrifice and hard work? It’s actually the good part.

Because when you put in the work – the real, grinding, sometimes soul-crushing work – you get something extraordinary in return. You get a being who loves you unconditionally, who doesn’t care about your job title or bank balance. You get a loyal companion who will consistently choose your company over literally anything else in their world.

Happiness comes from going through struggle.

The joy isn’t in spite of the hardship – it’s because of it. Every successful training session, every breakthrough in behavior, every morning they finally let you sleep in (okay, until 7 AM) – these victories taste sweeter because you earned them. They cost you something, like effort, patience, forgiveness, empathy, and lots of it.

So if you’re thinking about getting a dog, do it. But do it with your eyes wide open. Don’t be another statistic in the shelter return rate because you thought it would be “fun and easy.” It won’t be easy. It will test you. It will change your life. For better, and maybe a little bit for worse, but overall it’s worth it.

And if you do it right, it will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made.

Just don’t expect anyone to sympathize when your dog eats your homework. Or your tax returns. Or your wedding album. Because you signed up for this shit.

Welcome to the club, you magnificent bastards.

  1. Love this! Champ has been the best most challenging part of my life. All the sacrifices and endless training. I find that the more present I am with him, the better behaved and happy he is. It’s a constant reading of his behavior and anticipating his needs. The love he gives + him being well taken care of means everything to me. Thanks for writing this up! It’s definitely not all belly rubs and cuddles that’s right!!
