297. How to learn new concepts

The Feynman technique

This technique is used to be able to explain something to a beginner so that they understand the new concept or topic.

or to help us learn a new topic so we can see our weak areas!

Here are the 4 steps to this technique:

  1. What’s the concept / topic
  2. Explain in simple terms:
    1. Define and use small words
    2. Give examples or illustrations
    3. How can people use this practically?
  3. Identify the shaky areas, where were we having trouble explaining X in its most basic form?
  4. Review notes and simplify more –  ask questions like why? Could I explain this concept to a kid so that they would be able to understand it?
